Complex components, complex characterisation
Modern COTS, such as SoCs, SiPs, ASICs and other complex ICs, are hard to characterise under radiation. Standard means leave coverage partial and key vulnerabilities undocumented.
Hidden costs, hidden delays
The real cost lies downstream of partial characterisation: over-engineering, schedule slips, in-orbit demonstrations, corrective operations, degraded availability, up to mission loss.
One batch, one qualification
Radiation qualification holds only for the batch that passed lot acceptance tests. Each new batch means a new qualification, with storage and minimum-order overheads.

Components are tested while running, under full operating conditions, to identify, locate, quantify and mitigate their internal radiation vulnerabilities, for total ionising dose and single-event effects.
